Sort Yard Opens May 4, 2010

Meeker Park Community Forestry Sort Yard to reopen May 4.

Boulder County Forest Health Initiative is pleased to announce that the popular Meeker Park Community Forestry Sort Yard (CFSY) will open for the 2010 season on Tuesday, May 4.

CFSY are being established in Boulder County to help private forest landowners become more active stewards of their land and to provide a free of charge location to dispose of trees cut from their land during forest health improvement, bark beetle, and defensible space cutting projects.

The Meeker Park CFSY is located on the Peak-to-Peak Highway just north of Allenspark. The opening date is dependent on weather and may change if snowy or muddy conditions create access issues at the yard. Please visit http://www.BoulderCounty.org/ForestHealth for the most up-to-date operational information. The CFSY will operate 5 days a week, Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m through mid-July, 2010.

Boulder County's CFSY program is a collaborative effort with Peak to Peak Wood and aims to increase utilization of locally produced sustainable wood products. Please visit www.peaktopeakwood.org before starting your cutting projects to learn about cutting trees to specifications that will allow them to be utilized at their highest market value.

The new south Boulder County, Nederland CFSY, located on Ridge Road just north of Nederland, is anticipated to open in August and will operate at this location into October.

If there are questions about Boulder County's CFSY please contact Ryan Ludlow, Boulder County's Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator at 720-564-2641 or e-mail pinebeetle@bouldercounty.org.

After April, it's too late to treat with plastic!

When May rolls around, there just isn't enough time to cook the beetles by covering logs with plastic. The beetles are grown enough to chomp through bark, so a thin piece of plastic doesn't slow 'em down at all! Please chip or use other approved methods to keep the bugs from spreading.

Bugs 202: Or "What else is out there besides pine beetles?"

On December 8, 2008, Ingrid Aguayo, Entomologist, Colorado State Forest Service, came to Allenspark to speak to the ABC about the other bugs we've found while battling pine beetles. In an excellent presentation, she gave us an overview of the bugs and bug problems that we may see when trying to diagnose our ill or dying trees. Ingrid's PowerPoint presentation "Ips 202" is now available for download as a pdf file. In it you will find illustrations and facts about the ips beetle and others.

Clarification: The lethal temperature for bugs is 60 degrees Celsius, which is 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
